Social media is flooded with coverage of a Subway brawl between two homeless men in NYC being expertly broken up by cops – the big deal being that these cops were not New York’s finest in blue, but four Swedish cops on their way to Broadway’s Les Misérables.
Not only did these cops become famous after being recorded subduing the suspects, they received awards, interviews, and backstage passes to the Broadway performance that they missed. People are saying that these police officers “schooled” New York cops because they were able to handle the situation peacefully without excessive force – which is a trending issue in the U.S. at the moment.
Swedes are widely known as being very humble, so it is no surprise that one response was, “We’re no heroes, just tourists”. The use of hashtags #Swedishcops and #NYPD are saying differently, which is probably not what these four Swedes were expecting when they jumped in to de-esculate a dangerous situation. After enough pressure from the people and press about how impressive their police work was, it seemed that even the NYPD had to give credit:
What do you think?
Were they just fulfilling their civil duty to protect people? Did they go above and beyond because it wasn’t their people to protect? Should they have gotten so much praise and attention?
